Skadar Lake with a surface of 391 km2 is the largest lake in the Balkans, located in Zeta-Skadar basin.

Montenegro owns 2/3 of the lake, while the third in the territory of the Republic of Albania. Montenegrin part of the lake was declared a National Park in 1983. 1996 Ramsar Convention added Skadar Lake to the List of Wetlands of International Importance. The lake is a crypto depression, which means that its bigger part is below sea level. The coastline is jagged, with numerous bays, peninsulas and capes, consisting mostly of swamp area overgrown with reed.

 Virpazar is small town on Skadar Lake. Old part of the town is connected to the land via three bridges over small rivers that flows into the lake. Virpazar was the most important port on the lake.

Visitor center is located in Vranjina, near Virpazar and there one can see exibit and get information about all national parks in Montenegro.

Skadar lake is a bird paradise, it has 264 species of birds, many of which are in most of its range, narrow and vulnerable. This is the only habitat of pelicans in the south of Europe.
