Durmitor is a mountain and national park located in the northwest of Montenegro. It was declared a national park in 1952. Durmitor National Park was included in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, while the Tara river and its canyon (which is the largest in Europe, after the Grand Canyon in the US, second in the world), as a part of the UNESCO program Man and the Biosphere were included in the worlds ecological biosphere reserves in 1977. The biggest and most attractive lake in Durmitor is the Black Lake. It is 2 km from the mountain town of Zabljak, the winter tourist center of Montenegro.
Durmitor National Park has a significant number of cultural monuments from ancient times to the present. Zabljak – according to legend, the name comes from Zabljak frogs that live on the locality Otoka and every year their croaks announce the arrival of spring. Zabljak got its official name in 1870, when the area actually become a part of the Principality of Montenegro and when on the same day started the construction of the church of Sv. Preobraženija, schools and captain home. The town of Zabljak is situated in the northwest of Montenegro, in the center of Durmitor.
